The Adult Education Committee presents dramatizations of two classic Yiddish stories by Nachman of Breslov and I. L. Peretz.  Member Jeffrey Rosen has created a play from each work, and the production will include Jeffrey performing with a cast drawn from Seaside Members.

The first story, “The Turkey Prince,” by the Chasidic Master Nachman of Breslov (1772-1811) tells of a Prince who becomes convinced he is a turkey, and of his royal father’s efforts to cure him. When medical means fail, a Learned Sage appears prepared to use Yiddishkeit to cure the Prince of his turkey fixation. Does the Learned Sage succeed where the therapist failed?

The second dramatized tale is “Pinch of Snuff,” by the Polish-Jewish Yiddish essayist and story writer I.L. Peretz (1853-1915). Trouble starts when Satan learns that the Rabbi of the legendary town of Helm has never sinned. In response, Satan enlists his minions including the temptress Lilith and Azazel of Yom Kippur scapegoat infamy to lead the saintly Rabbi astray. Does evil win out?

After these short pieces, Jeffrey plans to lead discussion of both plays, including their interlocking themes.  The event will be followed by Havdalah and a short Selichot Service.  A reception featuring light refreshments concludes the evening.
