                                       Community Service

Tikkun Olam – repairing the world – is one of the guiding principles of Seaside Jewish Community. We strive to make our community a better place to live and develop constructive relationships with the greater Jewish and non-Jewish community. Whether it’s by preparing or collecting food for those in need or through financial donations to local non-profit organizations that serve disadvantaged people, Seaside members are making an incredible impact on the Sussex County, Delaware community.

To get involved in our committee or participate in any of our programs (listed below), contact us.

  • Soup kitchen: Every sixth Sunday, Seaside volunteers plan, cook, and serve a meal for the hungry at Epworth United Methodist Church, our neighbor and partner in many community service activities.
  • Food rescue:  Teams pick up excess baked goods from area restaurants for donation to those in the need by the Epworth United Methodist Church Good Samaritan program.
  • Collection drives: Many collection drives are held during the year for items such as food, toiletries, coats, and diapers, which are donated to local non-profit organizations. At a recent collection drive, SJC members donated more than 1300 pounds of food for the Epworth food pantry.
  • Shelter meals: Seaside volunteers prepare meals for several homeless shelters in the area, including the Lighthouse for Broken Wings and the Love Inc. Troop 7 Barracks. On Christmas Eve, December 2020, Seaside members prepared dinner for more than 75 men, women and children housed in area shelters.
  • Financial donations: Working with our Board of Directors, the Community Services Committee identifies local non-profit organizations for SJC to support with a monetary donation.
  • ISOP (International Student Outreach Program): Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, SJC partners with Epworth United Methodist Church to provide a once-a-week dinner for students in the ISOP program. SJC members volunteer to staff the dinner and provide desserts.
