I have joined 600 Jewish clergy and growing around the country who have signed a statement outlining a core set of beliefs, grounded in biblical and rabbinic texts, that we believe should be guiding our nation's leaders. (Any colleagues who want to join, please let me know).

The message of Passover and the plight of refugees
04/02/2025 10:19:08 PM
At the first Passover, we marked our doorposts with the blood of a sacrificial lamb to protect us from the Angel of Death (Exodus 12:23). Although that was a one-time ritual, doors continue to be a central symbol of the holiday. It is a symbol that seems more relevant than ever in an age when nativism and xenophobia frequently clash with timeless Jewish values of loving and welcoming the stranger, the most often repeated mitzvah in the...Read more...

Judaism's demand for a just and compassionate society is more relevant than ever. Last week, in Parashat Yitro we read the 10 Commandments. In Mishpatim (Exodus 21:1-24:18), the Torah shifts from that grand, awe-inspiring revelation at Sinai to the everyday realities of a just...Read more...

10/13/2024 10:59:45 AM
How do we keep our faith in a troubled world? Let me do the Jewish thing, and answer with a question: what is faith, anyway?
Did anyone read the recent story in the Cape Gazette on August 16 of this year about a message in a bottle was returned after 17 years? In 2007, some cousins thought it would be fun to put a message and a dollar bill in a bottle and throw in the Delaware Bay. They wrote their first names...Read more...

Harry considers and says "You're...Read more...
How to Be a Lamed-Vavnik in a Troubled World (Rosh Hashanah morning Sermon, 5785/2024)
10/06/2024 03:13:11 PM
Have you u heard the Yiddish word, kaynahoreh? (Keep away the evil eye). My great-grandmother used to say that all the time that she mentioned something good.
What a cute baby, kaynahoreh! (phoo, phoo for good measure)
Which reminds me of a story:
Mr. Finkelstein is called as a witness in a trial.
"How old are you?" asks the D.A.
"I am, kaynahoreh, ninety one."
"Excuse me?...Read more...

03/22/2024 01:01:22 PM
This Purim, we explored the meaning of the book of Esther, and whether or not it "belongs" in the bible. The themes don't seem very religious, but under the surface (under the masks, so to speak), there's a lot of meaning for our lives today. This was the first of my "Rabbi's Seminar: Deep Dive Into the Holidays," series for 2024. Enjoy and Happy Purim!

Our second zoom from Israel was with Sue Reiss, who helped to found a Moshav in the Galilee region in the north of Israel. She was visiting her daughter in the center of the country at the time, and as she began to speak, sirens sounded because of a rocket attack and she had to enter a shelter. After a few minutes she emerged and continued her talk!

Shabbat Shalom. Today is the first Shabbat of the New Year, the shabbat traditionally known as Shabbat Shuvah – or as it also called, Shabbat Teshuvah.
What sets Shabbat Shuvah aside, and gives it its name, is the haftarah, the first words of the which are from Hosea Chapter 14, verse 2. “Shuvah Yisroel,” “Return, O Israel.” These words...Read more...

10/03/2023 03:57:30 PM
Tonight, I invite you to ask yourself a question that only you can answer: If not now, when? Let this question reverberate throughout Yom Kippur.
If not now, when? What arises when you ask this question? Could it be the image of a friend with you’ve been meaning to reconnect with or a family member with whom you need to reconcile? Or maybe what springs to mind is a long-dormant creative...Read more...
Yom Kippur Morning Remarks (Part of morning sermon), from Allan Slan

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
