HAFTARAH FOR FIRST DAY OF SHAVUOT- EZEKIEL 1:1 -28; 3-12
Known as the Merkava (literally "Chariot"), this momentous Haftarah literally extends from by the waters of Babylon during the Exile to the most celestial of places ; the Prophet Ezekiel's breathtaking vision of the presence of the Heavenly Presence. It has been studied and interpreted by generations of Jewish scholars and mystics. Christians have also interpreted its various symbols and layers of meaning. The questions abound. Who was Ezekiel ? What kind of vision is Ezekiel experiencing ? Why and how in an unfriendly foreign shore in exile? Is the vision meant literally or symbolically? What is the cosmology of this vision? Why was this passage chosen to be the Haftarah for Shavuot ? How does the final line taken from two chapters further in the Book of Ezekiel enhance the account of the vision?
