Book Group - "Who by Fire" by Matti Friedman (Author attending)

This event is held in conjunction with the Lewes Public Library and Browseabout Books.

Chosen as one of the best nonfiction books of 2022 by Vanity Fair and Amazon Books, Who By Fire tells of the 1973 Yom Kippur War in Israel and Leonard Cohen’s trip there to support the troops. 

If you like Leonard Cohen’s music, you will want to hear how this trip inspired his song “Who by Fire” based on the Yom Kippur Prayer, Unetaneh Tokef.  But even more so in Friedman’s capable hands, we see the singer/poet morph from a depressed stagnant state to a performing and engaged artist.  And we learn details of the War that were little known to the Israeli people at the time. 

Friedman had access to the copious journals that Cohen kept throughout his life and brings this all to life in a moving and unforgettable telling.
