Although the Jewish community in Mexico numbers only 60,000, they have created a special culture of color and taste.  The authors, Ilan Stavans and Margaret E. Boyle, both have family roots in this community: Stavans, an Amherst College professor, was born and raised in Mexico City in the Sephardic tradition, and Margaret Boyle, a Bowdoin College professor, grew up in Los Angeles in a Mexican Jewish family in the Ashkenazi tradition.  Their lavishly illustrated and award-winning cookbook contains 100 recipes tested by well-known Jewish chef, Leah Koenig. The original recipes, written in Yiddish, Polish, and Spanish, show how immigration and the diaspora form identity, and what it means to connect to your culture through food and language. Based on a huge array of sauces, many Mexican recipes are inherently kosher and vegetarian/vegan or easily tweaked to make them so. Organized by meals—desayuno (breakfast), almuerzo (lunch), and cena (dinner)—the book features dishes made for Shabbat, Rosh Hashanah, Passover, and Hanukkah. They will be interviewed on Zoom by Seaside member, Elia Ben David Jimenez, whose family came to Mexico at the time of the Spanish Inquisition (15th century).

Signed copies of the cookbook will be available for purchase from Browseabout Books.
