Book Group Event

5:00 PM - 6:00 PMVia ZoomBook Group Event: The Postcard by Anne Berest
Our last Book Group event of 2024 will be held in conjunction with the Lewes Public Library. The translator of the book, Tina Kover will be interviewed by Seaside member, Nina Glasner, about the translation process and her approach to translation.
The original book was written in French and won the prestigious Choix Goncourt Prize (analogous to winning Pulitzer in US or Booker Award in UK). The New Yorker and New York Times praised Kover’s translation of this French best seller. Hearing from the translator gives us a different insight into the book from the person who has to become most attuned to the author’s nuances and whose job it is to represent the author’s intentions honestly and accessibly to English readers.
The story reads like a detective novel as the main character investigates family trauma. It raises issues of relations between mothers and daughters, the meaning of intellectual and artistic life, and what it means to be Jewish. If you haven’t read it yet, you are in for a great experience, a book you don’t want to put down with characters whose emotions are all too real.
