Showcasing Ashkenazi lore, custom, and faith, this beautifully written story deftly tackles questions of identity, good and evil, obligation, and the many forms love can take. An angel and a devil have been studying together for centuries in a tiny shtetl, but pogroms and the search for a new life have drawn all the young people from their village to America. When one of those young emigrants goes missing, they set off to find her, taking the boat to New York City and dealing with the immigrant experience. 

The first-time author, Sacha Lamb, received for this title: Sydney Taylor and Stonewall award, a Printz Honor book, and a National Jewish Book Award finalist, and received the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award.
