Terrible Tanach Class

The class will read, discuss and analyze the materials described below in English but with occasional reference to the Hebrew. Class members should have a Bible with the passages being studied available for each class. Any translation is acceptable, and some classes have benefited from members having differing translations.

The class strives to be completely inclusive and welcoming. You need not have attended any prior classes to enjoy and participate fully in any or all of these classes. No knowledge of Hebrew or Jewish texts is required, The classes invite and encourage discussion, references to comparable or analogous world literature, and continued questioning. Everyone is welcome, regardless of background or level of knowledge.

Why are Lot and his family spared from the destruction? What famous Greek myth does the somewhat disproportional fate of Lot’s wife remind you? Why did Lot’s daughters act in the impulsive, incestuous way that they did, especially after being spared a similar fate in Sodom? How did the sin of Lot’s daughters manifest itself in future enmity with Israel’s neighbors? And how, if at all, can the sin be related to the seemingly irrelevant Book of Ruth?
