Notable Jewish Lives: Harvey Milk

Susan Towers will tell us about the life of Harvey Milk. The discussion will be based on the book Harvey Milk: His Lives and Death by Lillian Federman, an LGBT historian.

Milk, the first openly gay man elected to U.S. public office, had many lives, as the author notes by her choice of the word “Lives” to describe him. He passed through many identities, from teacher to Wall Street securities analyst, from actor to hippie, before becoming a politician. Milk’s assassination at the age of 48 has led to his icon status as a man who broke down “closet doors” and devoted himself to social justice.

Although not a religious person, Milk frequently referred to his Jewish cultural heritage in various acts and speech. Hailed by Time Magazine as “one of the 100 most influential individuals of the twentieth century,” Milk has been honored with a U.S. postal stamp and a naval ship named for him.

This is your opportunity to hear about Milk the person and why this charismatic, eloquent, and smart man’s legacy lives on. You do not need to read the book to attend.
