The Almost Unknown Story of Jewish Settlers Escaping from the Czar by Eric Doroshow

Seaside member Eric M. Doroshow will present the "Almost Unknown Story of Jewish Settlers," a tale of forty-three Russian Jewish families who escaped the Czar and Russia in 1882. Upon immigrating to America, they formed a Jewish farming cooperative in rural southern New Jersey called Alliance, as a first-time social experiment to create an agricultural-based community. The story of the Alliance colony is almost unknown, although a network of their descendants remains in touch with each other to this day. Together they have traced their families’ histories and have retold their ancestors' inspiring stories of immigration and the experience of late 19th century American Jewry. As one of the descendants of the second wave of settlers to the colony in 1888.  Eric will tell their story, Eric will also talk about the Jewish Farmers who settled in Delaware during this same time.
