Community Services

Our responsibilities as Jews include ones of Tikkun Olam (Repair of the World). This includes the providing of Tzedakah (Charitable Contributions), Hakhnasat Orkhim (Hospitality), and Community Outreach. Our Community Services Committee looks outward to meet our responsibility to be part of the Sussex County Community as a whole and the greater Jewish Community of Delaware and beyond.

Tzedaka (Charitable Contributions):

SJC contributes money to several organizations that help others. Organizations that help support people who are in need of food, shelter, clothing and other family needs. We also support various international and local Jewish organizations.

Food Donations

SJC collects non-perishable food products, gently used coats and clothing, or new toiletries, which are donated, to a variety of organizations that provide these items to those in need. Please bring items to SJC and put them in the wicker basket at the top of the stairs. The Community Service Committee will pick up your donated items and deliver them to local service organizations. Thank you and please help!

SuCoat Drive

Each year during the holiday of Sukkot, we collect gently used coats to be distributed to organizations, which provide coats to people who need them during the fall and winter months. The drive is occurring during Sukkot, hence - SuCoat Drive. The Sylvia Diehl SuCoat drive was named in memory of Sylvia Diehl. Sylvia came up with this idea and she also served as Co-Chair of this committee for many years.

Hakhnasat Orkhim (Hospitality)

International Student Outreach Program

Every summer Epworth United Methodist Church sponsors dinners for international and domestic studentsworking in the Rehoboth-Lewes area through the International Student Outreach Program (ISOP). SJC volunteers help set up, serve and we also donate dessert. This is a very rewarding feeling to help these children.

Road Clean Up

SJC and Epworth United Methodist Church gather together two times a year to clean up Holland Glade Road, the road where our facilities are located. This program is sponsored by the State of Delaware's Department of Transportation. We take turns hosting a pot-luck dinner after the clean-up to join our two communities together.

Community Outreach

Interaction with Jewish Federation of Delaware

SJC participates in the work of the Jewish Federation of Delaware and helps sponsor Federation programs in Sussex County. One of the programs that we participate in is Mitzvah Day. Each year the entire Jewish community of DE gets together for a day of doing projects and good deeds for others. We at Seaside always hold our own Mitzvah Day here in our part of the state. SJC attends the Jewish Federation Annual Shabbat Dinner each year.
