MON 7/15: Haftarah Class

7/15/19 - 3:00 PM - SJC Building

he Adult Education Committee is pleased to announce a special summer session of the Haftarah class at SJC on Monday, July 15 from 3 to 4:30 p.m.
The class will discuss the Haftarah for Va'etchanan (Isaiah 40:1-26) better known as Haftarah "Nahamu" ("Comfort You") from the repeated first words of the Haftarah. The Haftarah marks the end of the preceding three Haftarot of Admonition and is the first of the seven Haftarot of Comfort regarding the Babylonian Exile and its end. These Haftarot are read in the summer, immediately after Tish-ah b'Av.
This class will consider several questions, including: Who was the Second Isaiah? What was the significance of the Babylonian Exile? How does the Haftarah answer the timeless question of why bad things happen to good people? How does the Haftarah and the Second Isaiah relate to the visions of the earlier Isaiah? What is the theology and concept of G-d of the Second Isaiah and this Haftarah?
Come prepared to discuss! Knowledge of Hebrew is not a prerequisite. The Haftarah class will resume in October with a complete schedule of nine more sessions covering Haftarot not discussed in prior years.
